A medical team led by Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO), public health, Pitambar Das recently visited the village, 30 km from here, to take stock of the situation.
Sarpanch Padma Charana Sahu said the team visited the area after he complained to Ganjam district Collector Prem Chandra Chaudhary about the spread of the disease.
"The rise in such cases has created panic in the village. Most patients are undergoing treatment at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Raipur in Chhattisgarh," said Sahu.
The ADMO said four persons, aged between 40 and 60, are undergoing regular dialysis at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam. "We are verifying their medical records to know the exact problem," he said.
The health team also collected water samples from the village and the nearby areas. "These will be sent to Regional Research Laboratory for tests. Corrective steps would be taken after we get the quality report," he said.
Heath workers working in nearby villages have been asked to immediately inform doctors about kidney patients in their areas. "No case was detected in adjoining villages," the ADMO added.
