More than 500,000 people in Sri Lanka have been affected by the ongoing drought in nearly 25 districts, disaster management officials said today.
As the drought has worsened, officials are now providing drinking water supplies to the affected people.
"We are providing water bowsers and tanks to the areas," Pradeep Kodippili, a relief official said.
The number of people being provided drinking water has now risen to 624,522, up from 200,000 six days ago with more provinces being hit by the drought.
The worst hit area is the North central province where 145,048 people are being supplied drinking water followed by the eastern province where 133,313 people are affected.
Most of the water reservoirs have water less than 50 per cent of their capacities. The drought is expected to end in around two days, weather officials said.
