Sent in to bat, Sri Lanka were given a solid start of 57 by openers Dimuth Karunaratne (38) and Kaushal Silva (20 not out) after Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq opted to field on a greenish pitch at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
Experienced batsman Kumar Sangakkara was the other not out batsman, on eight.
The state of the pitch prompted Pakistan to play three pacemen and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, but the Sri Lankan openers blunted the attack with some confident batting.
Karunaratne hit three boundaries in the first three overs, and five in all, before he miscued a drive off paceman Junaid Khan and was smartly snapped up at gully by Asad Shafiq.
Pakistan strove hard for wickets in the first hour but wasted one review when they appealed for a caught behind against Silva off Junaid. Replays showed the batsman had not touched the ball.
Sri Lanka left out senior paceman Nuwan Kulasekara and entered the Test with two seamers and all-rounder Angelo Mathews plus two spinners, Sachitra Senanayake and Rangana Herath.
