The ruling BJD today faced criticism from opposition parties for its spokesman's comments that state government departments used to provide "wrong" information to the state Assembly.
BJD spokesman and former minister P K Deb, during an interaction with media over the Mahanadi water dispute issue, said "Some times the departments give wrong information to the Assembly.
Deb was replying to a question as to how the state government in its petition to the Water Resources Ministry claimed the state would be affected due to projects on the upstream of Mahanadi, while the Chief Minister in a reply to the Assembly in 2010 had rejected such possibility.
"It was the Chief Minister who had informed the Assembly in 2010 on the Mahanadi issue. Now, it is understood that he has admitted himself as a liar and the people of Odisha have come to know that he (CM) is a liar. Finally he has told the truth," Leader of Opposition Narasingh Mishra of the Congress said.
BJP state unit president Basant Panda also criticised the state government for misleading the Assembly.
"The false information given by the Chief Minister in the Assembly is an insult to democracy," Panda said.
Government Chief Whip Anant Das was quick to respond that government departments never provide wrong information to the State Assembly.
"There might be some typographical or clerical mistakes. It is not apt to say that information provided by the departments is wrong, rather the information provided is not in the proper order. Usually departments provide information that is available with them," Das clarified.
