"I think the North and West do have reason to be concerned about that. And it is not something where the solution is thought of at an all India level," Sen said while answering questions after a talk here.

"We know that Bengal and Assam recently have problems of their own, there is no denial. But Punjab and Haryana which have been very successful in many ways do have these problems," he said.

Sen, who was here to deliver the JRD Tata memorial oration on the subject - 'Women and other people' had earlier said that in comparison to North and the West certain other states like Tamil Nadu had been successful in improving the sex ratio indicators of their populations.

"I think one thing that is increasingly clear is that different regions of India has a different set of problems. They succeed in some and they fail in others. In this respect the North and West have to devote serious energy," he added.

Sen said that India was very diverse and solutions also had to be so. He said that he did not think that the ratio of women who work was higher in Punjab and Haryana as compared to other states. He added that in Rajasthan there was a high number of women who were employed but the quality of work could not be rated as high. (More)
