States work on security guidelines for schools, Patna police

Educational institutions in Patna were today asked by police to install CCTV cameras as states worked on fresh security guidelines for them after the massacre in a Peshawar school that prompted the Centre to mull a new advisory.
As the preparedness of the schools in the event of a terror attack came under focus, the guidelines in the fresh advisory are expected to include asking them to prepare an escape plan for children, steps to prevent hostage situation, how to raise alarm and shut doors and gates in case of an emergency.
Police forces have been placed near schools and other educational institution in Patna, Senior Superintendent of Police Jitendra Rana said in Patna.

All schools and educational institutions had been asked to install CCTV cameras for security purposes, he said.
These institutions would be approached through station house officers to furnish details about bus drivers and their assistants, he said.
In Delhi, the Police has already issued a set of guidelines to schools and colleges and SHOs today visited the institutions in their jurisdiction areas and met authorities to discuss security measures.

A police official said that army schools in the city and those in the Cantonment and diplomatic enclave of Chanakyapuri have been given a specific security cover.
The Delhi Police top brass has asked all district DCPs to take enhanced security measures at schools and colleges under their jurisdiction area.

Hyderabad police said it plans to draw up guidelines on safety and security of school students in the city.
"We will come up with certain protocols through the Education Department and definitely we will look at the safety and security of students," Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy told reporters.
He was responding to a question on safety and security measures in city schools, after atleast 132 students and nine school staffers were killed in a terror attack on a Army-run school in Peshawar yesterday.
When told that parents and managements in some schools are keen to see police imparting security tips to children as a precautionary measure, he said, "...Definitely we will think about it."

In Delhi, Union Home Ministry officials said, "The earlier advisory was issued by the Home Ministry in 2010 to prominent schools and institutions after Mumbai terror attack accused David Coleman Headley was arrested in the US. We will revisit the advisory and send it afresh considering the present situation."
Officials have said that some schools would be given special instructions separately and they would be asked to coordinate with local police and administration for security drills.
According to them, a few top schools in Delhi, Mumbai and some residential schools in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are likely to be given special security guidelines.
