Stealing Rs 5L in old notes takes man to bank, then to cops

A 24-year-old man and his mother- in-law landed in jail after the former allegedly stole Rs 5 lakh, and jwellery, in demonetised notes from his employer's home in south Delhi's Mehrauli area and went to a bank to deposit the money.
Police said they arrested Johnny Singh and his 35-year-old mother-in-law from their home state Uttar Pradesh on November 22.
"It was found that Johnny had deposited (part of the) cash in his bank account at Kalyanpur Branch, UP on November 18. A team was sent to Kanpur and CCTV footage of the bank was checked where Johnny was seen," said DCP (South) Ishwar Singh.
The police team conducted extensive ground work to developed local intelligence and trace Johny.
"On November 22, police team arrested the accused when he visited the bank (again) to deposit cash. On searching him, Rs 1.72 lakh, five gold rings, one gold chain, and silver articles were recovered from him," said the officer.
Giving the details, the officer said, Rajesh Aggarwal, the accused's employer, approached police on October 12 stating that Rs 5 lakh and jewelry had been stolen from his house.

"After the case was registered, Aggarwal's servant Johnny Singh was untraceable and his mobile phone was switched off. The police team visited Johnny's house here but he was absconding," said the officer.
The police obtained Johnny's bank account number and kept an eye on the transactions.
He said they recovered stolen cash of Rs 55,000 and two gold rings from his mother-in-law Gayatri Devi in Atrauli village in Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh.
During interrogation, Johnny told police since he was working at Aggarwal's cosmetic items shop for the last five years, he had easy access to his employer's house in Mehrauli.
"On October 11, since it was Dushehra, nobody was in the house except Aggarwal's old father. Johnny left the shop on the pretext of his son's illness, reached the house of his employer and committed the theft," the officer said.
When an FIR was lodged and servants were being inquired, he got scared and left for his native place with his family.
"He disclosed since the stolen cash was in the form of demonetised notes, he wanted to deposit the entire cash in his bank account," added the officer.
