Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is "extremely angry" over the alleged involvement of some party leaders and members in extortion and syndicate racket and has warned that stern action would be taken against those involved in it, a party leader said.
She will give clear instructions against them in her speech on Martyr's Day programme of her party on July 21, a senior TMC leader told PTI.
"Our party chief Mamata Banerjee is extremely angry with these incidents (of extortion and involvement in syndicates). We will not tolerate any indiscipline in the party. Strict action will be taken by the party against those who are found to be involved in extortion and syndicate racket," he said.
The party is making a list of leaders who are allegedly involved in syndicate racket and extortion, he said, adding "Those who are involved will not be spared. The administration will take action without considering the colour of the party."
"Earlier too the party supremo had cautioned a section of leaders and workers against their alleged involvement. On July 21, Banerjee will give clear instructions to party workers against those involved in syndicate racket. Due to a section of leaders the image of our party is taking a toll," the leader said.
According to Trinamool sources, police have also been given go ahead to deal with such cases strictly.
Salt Lake Trinamool councillor Anindiya Chattopadhaya was arrested earlier this month over charges of extortion. Banerjee had in the past too expressed her displeasure on the issue and asked partymen to stay away from syndicates and extortion.
Syndicate business in Bengal is run by persons reportedly enjoying political patronage who force promoters and contractors to buy construction materials, often of inferior quality at high prices.
The Opposition had time and again accused a section of TMC leadership for being involved in the syndicate racket. The Left Front too faced similar accusations of patronising syndicates towards the end of its 34-year-long rule.
