In a major haul, a team of the Special Task Force (STF) today seized 40 kg heroin, concealed in apple boxes, during a check barrier near Vardhaman Chowk on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road here.
According to inspector (STF) Harbans Singh, who was leading the party, as soon as they stopped a car for checking at the barrier, they found wooden boxes containing apples inside it.
"When the boxes were opened, we were taken aback to find 40 packets of heroin of 1 kg each, which were concealed under the apples," he said.
The STF team impounded the car and arrested one person, identified as Gurpal Singh, a resident of Amritsar, Harbans Singh said.
During preliminary investigations, the suspect told the police that he had got the consignment from Pakistan.
Gurpal Singh was also stated to be of criminal background, the STF inspector said, adding that a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the law and further investigations were under progress.
