CISF authorities today unearthed a racket allegedly selling mobilephone SIM cards to air travellers on forged documents at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here.
The alleged criminal activity was detected by the intelligence wing of the Central Industrial Security Force when an Azamgarh resident A K Yadav arrived from London at the terminal-3 of the airport around 9 AM and reported to the sleuths that his passport has been lost somewhere in the airport area.
Officials said during the course of finding out the possible place where the passport could have been left by Yadav, CISF officials came to know that he visited a mobile company outlet in the arrival area of the terminal for getting a new SIM card.
The CISF personnel on-duty, officials said, were surprised to know that Yadav was given a fresh SIM card upon his landing by the executive of the company showroom based on the passport documents of an Afghan national.
"It was found that the store owner Vinish Kumar issued the SIM card to Yadav on the passport of an Afghanistan citizen named Mohammed Yunus as his passport was lost. The store owner was apprehended immediately and was handed over to local police," a senior CISF officer said.
Police have charged Kumar under sections 420 (forgery), 464 (making a false document) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the IPC.
They have asked Yadav to cooperate in the investigation which could lead to arrest of some more operators providing SIM cards on forged documents to needy air travellers at a hefty price as soon as they land or depart from IGIA, the officer said.
Officials suspect some people dealing in this business would have illegally kept a number of copies of passports of foreign travellers which they could later use to sell SIM cards fraudulently to needy fliers in lieu of a hefty sum of money.
The CISF officials, meanwhile, are checking CCTV footage to look for the lost passport of Yadav.
