Normal life remained affected for the second consecutive day today in Kashmir Valley due to a strike called by hardline Hurriyat chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani in the wake of communal clashes in Kishtwar town of Jammu.
Most of the shops, business establishments and petrol pumps across the Valley remained shut. Public transport was off the roads but few private cars and autorickshaws were seen plying.
The authorities have kept police and paramilitary personnel on the stand-by to meet any eventuality in the city and other vulnerable areas of the Valley, official sources said.
Geelani, who described the situation in Kishtwar town, as "grave" had said "the future course of action will be decided after reviewing the situation in the affected areas.
