Police said the incident occurred when a group of 40 students from a private engineering college in Vellore, on an excursion, were taking a dip in the famous 'Suryakundam Theertham' (pool) at the centre.
Ramesh was found drowning in the pool and fellow students pulled him out. He was later taken to a private hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police said.
A case had been registered and the body brought to the government hospital here for post-mortem, they added.
They said normally those with heart ailments and history of epilepsy were not allowed to enter the pool.
