About 20 students have been admitted in nearby hospitals with injuries received in the clash, official sources said, adding no arrest has been made so far.
Trouble had been brewing for the last few days following a direction issued by the University authorities to evict those living in the hostels immediately after the exams for the ongoing academic session get over.
A number of students, including girls, had been staging demonstrations outside the office of the Vice-Chancellor demanding that they be given a few months' time as a number of competitive exams were around the corner and search for a new accommodation would affect their preparations.
However, the University administration adopted a tough stance and pointed out that the move was essential to rid the hostels of a number of "unauthorised occupants" who had been staying there despite having passed out many years ago.
The agitation intensified yesterday when the students gheraoed the VC's office for the entire night.
Though University authorities were not available for comments, the agitators claimed that their move had "compelled" the Vice-Chancellor A K Singh to remain confined inside his chamber and prevented him from going to his residence.

A large number of policemen had been deployed inside the premises upon the request of the University administration and no disturbance took place till this afternoon.
However, by evening, with the varsity authorities refusing to budge and rumours of disciplinary action against agitators, the demonstration turned violent and students pelted stones on policemen on being asked to call off their stir.
The agitated students vandalised furniture and flower pots, smashed window panes besides setting fire a number of cars, scooters and a bus.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor and other senior University officials have been taken out of the premises.
A huge deployment of police personnel, including Provincial Armed Constabulary and Rapid Action Force units, was made in the area to keep the situation under control. PTI NAC
