Students took to streets from early morning forcing traders to down shutters of shops and business establishments in the town to protest the death of Anshu Raj, a Part-II student of the TNB College, two days ago after he was hit by a police jeep in the campus, sources said.
The rampaging students also enforced closure of colleges and other academic institutions in the town, they said, adding the protested also pelted stones on passing vehicles damaging several vehicles.
At Ambedkar Chowk, former health minister and senior BJP leader Ashwani Chaube led a group of students in observing dharna in protest against the incident and demanded compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the student's family.
Addressing the students, Chaube demanded stern action against those responsible for the death of the student.
The protesting students had yesterday fought a pitched battle with the police in which dozens of people, including the DSP (Town) Veena Kumari and several other cops, had sustained injuries.
The police had subsequently lathicharged the protesters and arrested several of them to bring the situation under control.
