Union Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today said students have the right to express themselves, but have to be within the framework of the Constitution and not above national interests.
"JNU is an educational institution and students there have the right to express themselves. But, they cannot go outside the framework of the Constitution. They cannot go above national interests," Paswan told reporters here.
"It is not about students...Remain Leftist or Rightist, but remain within the framework of the Constitution," he emphasised.
Asked to comment on the visit of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi to JNU immediately after the row there, the Minister said "Every political party has the right to do their work. But, political parties should not directly interfere in students' affairs in universities."
"Rahul Gandhi had taken up the suicide case of the Hyderabad University Phd scholar, but why has he not taken up the other issues also?" Paswan wondered.
