Eighteen students of a local college were arrested here today on charges of burning an effigy of PETA CEO Poorva Joshipura, who they alleged was instrumental in getting a ban imposed on the bull taming sport of Jallikkattu, police said.
They raised slogans against People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and alleged that the sport was banned based on Poorva's petition and set afire her effigy, police said.
However, police present there managed to put off the fire, they said.
Meanwhile, a group of students, affiliated to ABVP, were removed from near the Government Arts college, when they were preparing to observe a fast in support of Jallikkattu, police said.
In another related development, a group of persons, active in social media, assembled at VOC Park grounds here, holding placards in support of the sport.
They wanted to spread the message seeking support for Jallikattu through the users of social media like Facebook and Whatsapp.
