Kerala High court today observed that the state government should take steps to ban students unions if it is unable to prevent them from disrupting proper functioning of colleges and urged the students unions to behave in a more civilised manner.
A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice A M Shaffique, made this observation while considering a petition by a student of the government Law college here complaining interruption in study due to agitations staged by the pro-Congress Kerala Students Union.
The bench said it was "shocked to see the state of affairs in the college. The student organisation is preventing proper functioning of the college despite directions issued by High Court in various judgements. Right to Education is now a fundamental right forming part of Right to Life," it said.
The judges pointed out that on several occasions KSU conducted strikes in the college, and gheraoed the Principal.
"It is high time that such vandalism and hooliganism is prevented. It is high time that the students unions should behave in a more civilised fashion," the court said.
