A Sub Divisional Magistrate-level inquiry has been ordered into the major fire in a busy commercial street here which gutted at least 30 shops.
Social Welfare and Panchayat Minister M K Muneer told reporters here that the inquiry will draw up an action plan for rehabilitation of those whose shops were destroyed in the blaze last night.
Revenue officials have been directed to prepare an estimate of the revenue loss, said Muneer, who visited the Mittayi Theravu, a commercial hub.
Cabinet will take a decision on the compensation amount to be paid to those who lost their property, the Minister, who also visited the area today, said.
Officials of the Electrical Inspectorate, Forensic and bomb squad visited the street where fire had broken out at around 10 PM last night. The blaze was fully doused only by 3 am today.
'Mittai Theravu', also known as sweet meat street, houses several shops -- both big and small-- lined up on both sides of the narrow street, considered the busiest in Kozhikode in north Kerala.
Known as 'Street of Sweets' in the old times, the heritage street is lined up with several sweet stalls, textile shops and various other shops selling sundry articles.
Six persons were killed and 50 injured when a cracker shop caught fire in Mittayi Theravu in April 2007.
