Days after the Supreme Court scrapped a proposal for Jat reservation, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy today asked the government to bring an ordinance to provide quota for them.
In a statement here, Swamy said the previous UPA government, in its last days in office, had rushed through the proposal for Jat reservation without documenting as mandatorily required of the Backward Class Commission the ground reality of the backwardness status of Jats.
The Supreme Court had no alternative but to quash the proposal, he added.
Stressing that reservation for Jats is a national commitment that the government must "honour", he said, "I urge (Home Minister) Rajnath Singh to treat this matter as top priority and within four months issue a new ordinance for Jat reservations complying with the parameters set by the Supreme Court.
