The incident occurred in 2008 when Chirag United, coached by Bhattacharya, defeated Mohun Bagan in a IFA Football League match at the latter's home ground.

When the former India stopper, who had played for Bagan for several years, entered the Bagan tent after the match, he was heckled by a man named Bumba.

This led to filing of a criminal case.

Bumba had moved high court seeking quashing of the criminal proceedings against him.

Justice Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia told Bumba's counsel Jayanta Narayan Chattopadhyay that this being a matter of the Maidan, should not create bad blood and be sorted out amicably.

Both Bhattacharya and Bumba were present in the court where Bumba apologised for his actions to Bhattacharya before Justice Ahluwalia.

The matter was resolved and the case was dismissed.
