Holding successful elections would help cement the peace process that started in 2006, the US said today as people in Nepal prepared to vote in the second Constituent Assembly polls tomorrow.
"The people of Nepal are preparing to vote in their Constituent Assembly election on November 19. Holding successful elections would help cement the peace process that was started in 2006," State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said.
"Over the next days and weeks, as complete results of these polls become known, the US urges patience, non-violence, and respect for a democratic process," she said.
Nepal will elect a 601-member assembly to draft a new Constitution. The polls to elect the Constituent Assembly are the second national elections since Nepal's 10-year civil war ended in 2006.
"We look forward to the formation of an assembly that will enact a constitution and pass legislation that will uphold human rights and democratic processes and lead to economic prosperity," Psaki said in a statement.
