Sugar prices tumbled by Rs 40 per quintal at wholesale market in the national capital today on increased selling by millers amidst reports of higher output.
Slackened buying also put pressure on the sweetner prices.
Traders said reports of higher production data for October-February period of 2014-15 marketing year and persistent selling by millers mainly kept pressure on sugar prices.
Meanwhile, sugar mills produced 19.4 million tonnes of sugar, compared to 17.04 million tonnes in same period, according to Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).
In the millgate section, among government and co-operative mills such as Ramala, Anupshar, Baghpat and Morna fell by Rs 40 each to Rs 2,590, Rs 2,570 and Rs 26,00 and Rs 2,600 each per quintal.
Private mills such as Mawana, Budhana, Thanabhavan and Khatuli also fell up to Rs 30 at Rs 2,605, Rs 2,615, Rs 2,605 and Rs 2,720 per quintal respectively.
