Barley prices surged by Rs 18.50 to Rs 1,526.50 per quintal in futures trading today after speculators enlarged their commitments amid a firm trend at the spot market on strong demand.
At the National Commodity and Derivative Exchange, barley for current month delivery shot up by Rs 18.50, or 1.23 per cent, to Rs 1,526.50 per quintal, clocking an open interest of 5,170 lots.
Likewise, delivery in June hardened by Rs 16.50, or 1.07 per cent, to Rs 1,553.50 per quintal, having an open interest of 15,240 lots.
Marketmen said besides tight supplies, summer season demand from beer makers in the spot markets, mainly supported the upside in barley prices at futures trade here.
