Even as AAP government is pursuing complete statehood status for Delhi, party legislators today demanded that city Police Commissioner be summoned in the House and made "accountable" for deteriorating law and order in the national capital.
After Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's address to the first session of the Sixth Assembly, speaker Ram Niwas Goel asked the MLAs to put forth their views on the address made in the House. But all AAP MLAs in unison raised the issue of women's security and increasing crime rate in the city.
Many, including the younger lot and especially women legislators, demanded that the police chief be summoned.
"I have been in the agitation since last five years and have seen how the police responds to complaints. People come to us with complaints and they think we can solve their problems. We cannot help them unless the police comes under the control of the state government," Rohtash Nagar MLA Sarita Singh said.
"How do we sort the issue out? At least the police chief should be summoned to the House and he should be made accountable," Singh said.
She also demanded suspension of erring officials whenever there is a crime related incident against women.

AAP has been strongly pitching for having Delhi police under the control of the state government. After the Assembly polls results, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu and raised the issue of granting complete statehood to Delhi.
"It is the intention of my government to push for full statehood for Delhi, which has been a long-standing demand of the people of Delhi. The provision of critical public services such as law and order and low-cost housing would happen more smoothly if Delhi were accorded autonomy as a full-fledged state with greater control over these aspects," Jung said in his address today.
