The Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi today approved the constitution of the three-member panel based on the directions of the Supreme Court.
"The Cabinet approved the constitution of the supervisory committee for Mullaperiyar dam in accordance with the orders of Supreme Court," Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters after the meeting here.
The proposal was mooted by the Water Resources Ministry following a Supreme Court judgement in May which directed setting up of the committee.
According to the proposal, the supervisory committee will ensure increasing the full reserve level to 142 feet and look into the safety aspects of the over 100-year-old structure.
