Little Tofajjal (8-month-old) was suffering from Encephalomeningocele, a rare condition which prevented him from leading a normal life like other children since his birth.
Surgeons of city's Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals came forward to rescue the child, promising the parents, living 85 km off Agartala in Tripura, the best in healthcare by giving a new life to Tofajjal suffering from a critical cyst similar to a second head.
As time passed by, the cyst too looked like a second head and was still growing. "He could not move or crawl because of the heavy weight of his head. The mother had to take care of the second head too. They always had to ensure that it did not hurt," doctors said.
Seven days after Tofajjal's birth, puzzled Sahalam Miyan and Sabiya Khatun took their only child to a local doctor but were told that "the case is very risky, and mortality chances are very high".
Under regular monitoring, the baby has recovered very fast and is in a very jovial mood, they claimed, adding ghat the baby had just been discharged.
According to Sisir Das, senior consultant, Neurosurgery, of the Apollo Gleneagles institute of Neurosciences, "This is indeed a rare variety of Neurosurgery as incidence rate of such type of cases is as low as one out of 45,000. In a life time, one comes across only one or two such cases.
