The State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) today booked two police officers for allegedly confining a family on framed-up charges and releasing them after demanding and accepting a bribe in Reasi district.
A case was registered by SVO against Deputy SP and the then SDPO Arnas Zubeer Mirza and the then SHO Arnas Ranjeet Singh, an SVO spokesperson said.
On September 15, 2014, the complainant Gopal Singh was taken into custody from his residence by Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station Arnas on allegations that the marriage of his son withRenu Devi was illegal as she was pregnant prior to the formal wedding, SVO spokesman said.
The verification has further showed that the complainant, along with his daughter-in-law and her father, was produced before Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Arnas Zubeer Mirza by SHO Ranjeet Singh where one Mushtaq, known to the complainant, pleaded for their release.
However, the SDPO and SHO made a demand of Rs 2 lakh for their release which was negotiated to Rs 1.20 lacs, he said.
Mushtaq then paid Rs 20,000 on spot to the SDPO, he said, adding, thereafter, on the intervention of senior officers, complainant and others were released on September 16, 2014, the spokesman said.
He said iit was prima facie established that the two policemen in blatant abuse of their official position, demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 20,000 in order to release the complainant and his family members.
An investigation of the case has been taken up, he said.
