NCP leader Ajit Pawar Tuesday asked the Maharashtra government to table the State Backward Class Commission report on Maratha reservations in the Legislative Assembly, adding that the opposition would not let the House function till this demand is met.

He was speaking to reporters outside the Assembly.

Pawar, earlier in the day, however, had taken a different stand on the issue in the Assembly saying there was no need to table the report in the House without checking if it can be challenged in court.

"When (state) Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil says Maratha quota should stand legal scrutiny, there is room for doubt. We demand that, whatever the report is, it should be tabled in the House. If this is not done, we will not allow the House to function," Pawar said Tuesday outside the Assembly.

Pawar, speaking in the House earlier, had suggested that a committee of leaders from various parties be formed to discuss the commission's report to ensure it stands legal scrutiny.

He said Maratha quota should be granted without impacting the existing 52 per cent reservation in the state.

He also said that due to the delay, there is a fear among the OBCs that Marathas would be given reservation from their quota.

Earlier, speaking in the House, Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said the state Cabinet had accepted the commission's recommendations on the Maratha quota of forming a special category of 'Socially and Economically Backward Class'.

"We will check whether the recommendations, if challenged, will stand legal scrutiny and then decide on whether to table the report in the House," Patil had said in the Assembly.
