Five decades after the independence of Gujarat's neighbouring union territories from Portuguese rule, their tableaux is likely to feature for the first time in the Republic Day parade on January 26 at New Delhi, a senior official said today.
"The tableaux of Union territories (UTs) have never been seen in the Republic Day parade even after 53 years since they got freedom from Portuguese rule," Administrator of Diu, Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haweli (DNH) Ashish Kundra said.
"This time we are making attempts so that tableaux of Dadra and Nagar Haweli or Daman may be included in Republic Day Parade along with other states. While Dadra and Nagar Haweli has the culture of fisheries activities, Daman still carries glimpse of Portuguese culture. We will send tableaux of
either of these UTs," Kundra added.
District collectors of both the UTs have been asked to collect details of cultural elements for the parade, Kundra said.
Diu, Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haweli attained freedom from Portuguese regime in 1961 and were given the status of Union Territories in 1987, when they separated from Goa.
The UTs' administration is in consultation with the Defence Ministry in this regard, he said.
"It will become the first event when tableaux of UTs are given a place in Republic Day parade," he said.
