In a letter to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde during the latter's visit to Dhubri last week, the AIUDF said that effective border management in the Indo-Bangladesh border would not be possible unless erosion was stopped.

"The present state of erosion along the Indo-Bangla border in Dhubri district... Has opened up a more dangerous aspect which is directly connected to sovereignty of the country and national security," AIUDF legislator Abdur Rahman Ajmal said in the letter.

"Because of erosion, India continues to lose land which is ultimately grabbed by Bangladesh. In some places along the riverine border, Bangladesh has almost full control over some stretches of Indian land where once Indian BOPs (Border Outpost) were functioning," he alleged.

"The strategic importance of these areas in unimaginable. Moreover, the collapse of barbed wire fence and the porous border areas along eroded land are hotbed of criminal activities including smuggling.

Due to continuous erosion over last 15 years, the Brahmaputra has come close to the border fence at Kaliar Alga and Kokradanga areas under Mankachar revenue circle of the district and the river is now only 20 metres away from the Sishumara BOP. (MORE)
