Odisha's industrial town of Talcher continued to remain the hottest place in the state for the third consecutive day today sizzling at 45 degrees Celsius even as the death toll due to sunstroke increased to eight, official sources said.
Talcher recorded 45 deg C today. However, there was some relief from the gruelling heat wave in some parts of the state as temperatures descended slightly in the interior districts, sources said.
However, the mercury remained at 40 deg C and above in Chandbali (40.9), Bhubaneswar (40.6), Angul (40.3), Jharsuguda (40.3), Sambalpur (40.2), Sundargarh (40.5), Hirakud (40.1), Bhawanipatna (42.5), Titlagarh (42.2) and Sonepur (42.6).
Meanwhile, sources in the state's Special Relief Commissioner's (SRC) office said the death toll due to sunstroke mounted to eight with two more reports being confirmed by the district collectors of Kendrapara and Jajpur.
"So far eight persons have succumbed to sunstroke in the state. While two persons have died in Mayurbhanj district, one person each died in Bhadrak, Balangir, Cuttack, Kendrapara and Khurda districts," a SRC official said.
The SRC's office has so far received 37 reports of sunstroke deaths, he said.
"Of the 37 cases, eight have been confirmed as deaths due to sunstroke, while 15 other persons died due to some other reasons. The SRC is yet to get report on 14 other cases," the official added.
