: Acting in response to a Madras High Court directive, the Chennai Central District Manager of state run TASMAC has warned all TASMAC attached bars that their licences would be cancelled unless they have permanent structures and not function from thatched sheds.
In response to a directive by the Court on a PIL filed by advocate K Balu against a bar at Anna Nagar (East) area here, where he is a resident, a TASMAC (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporatio) team carried out an inspection and a letter issued to the shop.
The bar attached to the shop was functioning partly in a thatched shed visible to the adjacent two storied residential building.
The petitioner sought a directiion to the authorities to cancel the license of the shop area.
The court then directed TASMAC to inspect the bar. The Chennai Central District Manager of TASMAC in the May 26 letter directed that no part of it shall be thatched as per Rule 10(3) of Tamil Nadu Liquor retail vending Act 2003, and the building must be pucca and visible from outside.
Referring to the bar concerned, he said though a portion of the bar was Air Conditioned, another part was functioning under an iron sheet roofing, with the concrete basement with iron bars.
The officer said a notice was sent to the officials concerned to remove the portion visible to the residents and if it was not done, the license to sell eatables and collection of empty bottles would be cancelled after issuing a Notice giving 15 days time to the licensee.
Balu alleged that the bar was creating nuisance to the residents of the area and functioning in violation of retail Liquor vending Rules and sought a direction for cancellation of the license.
