Income Tax authorities today began proceedings on the compounding petitions of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and her aide Sasikala in two tax return cases, a local court hearing the matters was apprised today by the Senior Special Public Prosecutor.
"The Compounding Committee (of the Income Tax Department) held its first meeting today on August 21 and adjourned the proceedings to 2.30 pm on August 27," SPP K Ramasamy submitted before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) R Dakshinamurthy.
Earlier today, when the income tax cases against Jayalalithaa and Sasikala came up for hearing before the ACMM, the Defence side filed petitions seeking adjournment for two weeks stating that compounding petitions were pending before the tax authorities.
The prosecution prayed that the matter be passed over to 3.30 pm as tax authorities had taken up the petitions seeking compounding of the offences.
When the court resumed hearing, the prosecutor told the Magistrate that the authorities had posted the matter to August 27 and that the case may be adjourned to a later date.
After hearing both sides, the ACMM adjourned the case to September 4 for further proceedings.

"Considering the request made by the petitioners, and the pendency of compounding petition before the authorities, the petition (seeking adjournment) is allowed," the Magistrate said in his order.
The case was last heard on August 7 when the defence stated that the compounding petitions, filed on June 25, were pending before the authorities and prayed for adjournment till today.
The department had launched criminal proceedings against Jayalalithaa and Sasikala for allegedly not filing returns in their individual capacity for the assessment year 1993-94.
Complaints were also filed by the IT department against Sasi Enterprises represented by its partners, Jayalalithaa and Sasikala for allegedly failing to file returns for the assessment years 1991-92 and 1992-93.
Discharge petitions filed by the accused were later dismissed by the Madras High Court and upheld by Supreme Court.
