Main opposition Telugu Desam Party organised a protest today at Bayyaram in Khammam district demanding that a steel plant be set up in the region itself and not divert iron ore supplies from local mines to steel plants elsewhere.
Addressing the protesters, TDP leader in Lok Sabha Nama Nageswara Rao, who represents Khammam, demanded that the Congress government spell out in clear terms that a steel plant would be established in the region.
The TDP's protest came in the wake of Andhra Pradesh government allotting iron ore mines in Khammam and other districts in Telangana region to Vizag Steel Plant(VSP), a Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) enterprise.
Alleging that mineral wealth of Telangana was being given away to VSP, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, fighting for statehood for the region, had also opposed the allotment of iron ore mines to the PSU situated in another region.
Dismissing the allegations, the state government had argued that there was nothing wrong in allotting mines to a PSU enterprise even as it indicated that it was all for setting up a steel plant in Telangana.
