In a setback to the opposition Congress and TDP ahead of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, a TDP MLA and a Congress MLC today said they had joined the ruling TRS in Telangana.
Senior TDP MLA from Cantonment area here G Sayanna and Congress MLC M S Prabhakar today met the TRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
"We have been in opposition for three times now. Works are not getting done. The idea is to develop the constituency even by requesting. I liked the programmes taken up by the Chief Minister after the formation of Telangana to make Hyderabad a global city. That's why, without even announcing a date, I am informing you that I joined (TRS) in his presence," Sayanna told reporters.
Prabhakar too said he had quit Congress and joined TRS as he liked the efforts being made by the Chief Minister to make Hyderabad "a global city and a model city".
Several MLAs from Congress, TDP and YSR Congress have switched over to TRS in Telangana in the last 15 months. Disqualification petitions are pending against some of them.
TDP floor leader in the Legislative Assembly E Dayakar Rao claimed that Sayanna's exit would not hurt the party as TDP was a cadre-based organisation.
