Ten legislators belonging to the opposition Telugu Desam Party were suspended from the Telangana Legislative Assembly for "trying to stall proceedings" this afternoon, but confusion prevailed over the actual duration for which the suspension is valid.
Moving a motion for suspension of the TDP members, who had rushed into the well of the House demanding that their party be allowed to speak on the budget, Irrigation and Legislative Affairs Minister T Harish Rao said, "The members named be suspended from the service of the House for this week".
Speaker S Madhusudanachari then said, "The question before the House now is that the members named be suspended for one day," and put it to (voice) vote. He then announced that the motion was adopted and the members were suspended for one day.
However, legislature secretary S Raja Sadaram said something into the Speaker's ear and the latter then said the "members named have been suspended for one week".
Initially, Harish Rao named only eight TDP legislators but later added the names of TDP Legislature Party leader Errabilli Dayakar Rao and senior MLA A Revanth Reddy, who incidentally was at the centre of the controversy, as they too came into the well in protest.
"Technically, the last word of the Speaker counts and as such the TDP members stand suspended for one week," a senior legislature official said.
Main opposition Congress and TDP's ally BJP wanted withdrawal of the suspension, but the government justified it.
The trouble started in the afternoon when Revanth rose to speak on the budget as part of the general discussion but the ruling TRS members prevented him, demanding that he first tender an apology for alleging that Nizamabad MP K Kavitha had submitted her details at two places during the Comprehensive Household Survey.
