A doctor of a tea estate hospital was shot at after an abortive bid to kidnap him by suspected militants in Assam's Baksa district along the Indo-Bhutan border, police said today.
A group of three unidentified persons, suspected to be belonging to an adivasi militant outfit, came on a motorcycle to Nagrijuli tea estate hospital last night and tried to abduct the doctor on duty.
The doctor, Suresh Deka, raised an alarm following which the abductors fired injuring the doctor and managed to flee.
The doctor was later shifted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger, police said.
The hospital guard has been detained for interrogation and it was yet to be ascertained whether the militants had earlier served an extortion to the garden.
The Nagrijuli tea estate was owned by the Kolkata-based Rossel Tea Company.
