The renovated and modernised Technicians' Studio in Tollygunj here, used by luminaries like Satyajit Ray and Uttam Kumar, was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today.
The six floors of the government-run studio were named after the six legends of Bengali cinema - directors Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha, Ritwik Ghatak and Rituparno Ghosh and actors Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar.
Banerjee said the nomenclature was done as a tribute to their role in Bengali cinema.
The studio where Satyajit Ray had shot portions of 'Pather Panchali' and where Uttam Kumar gave his last shot for 'Ogo Bodhu Sundari', had three floors and 14 make-up rooms.
Besides getting two new floors, the studio now had advanced light-and-sound equipment, and air-conditioned sets with modern facilities after it was damaged in a fire some years ago.
Bengali film superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee said, "We had lost all hope whether it would be renovated until the CM took the imitative."

The chief minister asked officials to start working on Technicians' Studio-II and announced that Radha Studio was now ready. She also showed interest in modernising the private Indrapuri Studio.
"We have all the required talent but we lack infrastructure," Banerjee said while inviting film-makers to explore new places in the state for shooting films.
She said her government was constructing two film cities and another TV studio in Baruipur.
She said that the state government would soon organise a musical event in Nazrul Mancha in the memory of legendary actress Suchitra Sen who passed away last month.
Recalling her meeting with Sen, Banerjee said she was lucky to have met the reclusive actress who had shied away from the public eye for the last 30 years.
