: Tension prevailed for some time today at INTUC cement workers union office in Madukkarai on the city outskirts, when some persons opposed installation of a bust of a former national general secretary.
The workers union had decided to observe 67th birth anniversary of national general secretaty N Nanjappan and also unveil a bronze bust at the office.
However, a group of workers opposed the move and an argument ensued between them, police said.
On receiving information, senior police officials, along with some police personnel, rushed to the spot and refused permission to unveil the bust considering the situation.
However, the birth anniversary function went ahead smoothly and former union minister and Rajya Sabha MP S R Balasubramanian, former Tamil Nadu minister Pongalur Palanisamy and several Congress leaders participated.
Palanisamy later said that permission was not needed to install a statue inside the office premises and it was not acceptable to cancel the event due to opposition from a handful of people, as Nanjappan was accepted as a great leader by the locals and also at national level.
