Police fired in the air, lobbed teargas shells and used water cannon to bring the situation under control after villagers indulged in brick-batting and arson.
The girl Premshila was hit by a bike in Bandarha village in Mankapur area while going to school, police said. She was rushed to the hospital where she died during treatment.
Agitated over the incident, villagers placed the body on a road and started brick-batting. They also torched some shops and bikes.
Senior police officials have reached the spot, police said, adding the situation "was under control but tense".
