Tension prevailed in nearby Coonoor today after a youth was attacked and injured allegedly by some Hindu outfit workers, leading to the arrest of eight persons, including a local RSS leader.
The 28-year-old man, running a biriyani centre, suffered injuries when he was attacked with iron rods last night and had been hospitalised, police said today.
He was first admitted to the Government hospital here, but later shifted to Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital, they said.
The incident, police stated to be a sequel to one last week when some persons at the biriyani centre passed some remarks to members of Hindu outfits who were travelling in a van to attend Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's rally in Tiruchirappalli on September 26.
As a preventive measure, nearly 150 police personnel had been deployed in Coonoor where the situation was now under control, police said.
