A Chinese woman has been robbed of her savings worth USD 65,000 by a gang of unusual burglars - termites!
The termites raided the woman's stash of banknotes worth 400,000 yuan (USD 65,240), leaving not even a single intact note, which she had hidden in a plastic bag in a wooden drawer in her house.
The children of the woman in Shunde, south China's Guangdong province gave her 400,000 yuan, six months ago.
Instead of depositing the cash in bank or cashbox, she simply put the banknotes in a plastic bag and placed it in a wooden drawer on the first floor at home, People's Daily Online reported.
She did not notice that her cash was gnawed by termites until this April when she opened the drawer to take some money to decorate her house.
"The remains of the cash stick together by termite's mucus," the woman said.
Bank staff scanned and manually counted the remaining banknotes, the Guangzhou Daily reported.
After a day's work, nearly 340,000 yuan (USD 55,454) was identified. The old lady lost about 60,000 yuan (USD 9,786) at last.
