The Chief Minister, in a statement here today, said he was doubly happy that Tezpur University bagged the prestigious award as he had been instrumental in persuading the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for two Central universities in the state -- one at Tezpur and the other at Silchar.
"It is rare to find two Central Varsities in any state. I am grateful to Rajivji for heeding to my plea for two Central Varsities in Assam," Gogoi added.
Gogoi hoped that the university would continue with its tryst with academic excellence and scale new heights of glory in the days ahead.
Tezpur University has been adjudged the best Central University in the country this year by the Ministry of Human Resources Development.
The award will be presented to the university by President Pranab Mukherjee on March 14.
Last year, the award was conferred on Hyderabad Central University.
