Somyot Poompanmoung, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said that nearly 100 screens in Bangkok would carry photos and pertinent information with billboards in other cities like Pattaya, Phuket, Hat Yai and Chiang Mai to follow later.
He said the project sprung from cooperation between police and the private sector and follows on the successful resolution of a missing person's case in Bangkok which was aided by input from the general public.
Under the scheme, digital billboards will show profiles of wanted vehicle thieves who will be chosen based the seriousness of their crimes.
He said the display of photos would not infringe anyone's rights or violate any laws because it was aimed at facilitating police investigations and serving the public interest, media reports here said.
