Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today said Congress leader Shashi Tharoor compared JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, facing sedition charges, with freedom fighter Bhagat Singh to further his political interests.
"It is saddening to see citizens like Shashi Tharoorji insult Veer Bhagat Singh just to gain political mileage," Patel said in a tweet.
On the occasion of Martyrdom Day today, Patel hailed the role played by Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru for the country.
"Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev & Rajguru in their short span of life inspired millions. Tributes to brave sons of India on their Shahid Din!" she tweeted.
She also attached a photo carrying a message in Gujarati stating that "it is painful to know that Shashi Tharoor compared Bhagat Singh with Kanhaiya (Kumar) for political gains. It's a matter of shame when some people use freedom fighters for their own political interests".
"Today is martyrdom day of Veer Bhagat Singh. This day is very important for all those who love their motherland. I pay my tribute to all those who laid their lives for India," she stated.
Tharoor's comparison of Kumar with Bhagat Singh drew sharp criticism from various quarters while the Congress has distanced itself from his remarks.
