Crowds of devotees had gathered on the banks of the Yamuna river and at lakes and canals to offer prayers to the setting Sun on the third day of the festival.
The observances today as part of the four-day festival saw people offering prayers at more than 50 major sites across the national capital.
Thus, thousands of devotees thronged to Soor Ghat, Geeta Ghat near ISBT, Purvi Ghat, Kudesiya Ghat, Shyam Ghat, Yamuna Ghat, Hathi Ghat and Kalindi Kunj, among others, to take part in the Chhath ceremonies.
Various puja committees, most of them having political links, made elaborate arrangements like providing for changing rooms and temporary toilets and putting up tents for devotees. Arrangements were also made for distributing food amongst the devotees.

The municipal corporations had deployed a large number of personnel to spruce up the various ghats with many councillors and political leaders having personally supervised the cleaning and other works.
Meanwhile, traffic remained heavy on roads like ITO, Bhairon Marg Pontoon Bridge, Agra canal, Badarpur, Bhalaswa lake, Bawana canal, Rainy Well, Shakarpur and IP Estate, Pushta Thokar No.11 in front of Bank Enclave, Haiderpur as devotees headed to the various spots for offering prayers.
The puja starts with the ritual of 'Nahai-Khai', in which devotees prepare traditional food after bathing. The day before Chhath puja is Kharna, for which devotees observe a day-long fast which ends at sunset.
