The threatened Himalayan Yak, called as 'Dong' in Ladakh locally, has been chosen as the mascot for the latest edition of the national police wrestling championship to be held here next week.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) force, that guards icy heights along India's frontier with China, has showcased this mighty four-legged animal for these all-India level games in order to create awareness about it in the outer world, and beyond Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, even as it projects the healthy fighting spirit and sportsmanship to be exhibited by wrestlers drawn from various central and state police forces.
The event will be held between March 1-5 here under the overall coordination of the ITBP.
"The sturdy Yak of Ladakh is listed as vulnerable under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of threatened animals and it can endure temperatures below minus 40 degree. The estimated population of this breed is about 40-50 in the Ladakh region," a senior ITBP officer said.
The event, organised by the All India Police Sports Control Board (AIPSCB) every year, is expected to see participation of 37 teams of various state police and central police forces like CRPF, CISF, SSB, ITBP and BSF.
1,600 sports personnel and 200 coaches and their supporting staff will participate in the event.
