Three brothers were today arrested for allegedly killing an elderly man, who was dragged from his house by the accused and beaten in full public view at Astodia Gate area of the city on September 1, police said.
The issue had created an uproar among citizens after the CCTV footage of the incident, showing Abdul Kadir Shaikh (75) being thrashed by a group on the road, went viral and was aired by local television news channels.
According to the FIR registered with the Gaekwad Haveli police a day later, about seven people stormed into Shaikh's house near Astodia Gate of the old city at midnight and dragged him outside.
"In the FIR, Shaikh's son Mushtaq alleged that the accused, who were armed with sticks and steel rods, first dragged Shaikh to the main road near the gate and started beating him. The CCTV grab also showed that the incident took place in front of some locals and bystanders," Gaekwad Haveli Police Inspector D I Sisodia said.
The CCTV footage, retrieved by the police from local shops in the area, showed Shaikh being beaten for almost five minutes. As per the FIR, all accused are members of the family of one Abdul Karim Pathan.
"After the accused left, his family took Shaikh to the hospital, where he died last Tuesday due to fatal injuries. So, we have added IPC Section 302 (murder) and started our investigation. Today, we arrested three brothers involved in the murder," the police official said.
Those arrested are Sajid Khan Pathan (43) as well as his two brothers Samir Khan (39) and Mehboob Khan (34).

According to the inspector, Samir allegedly had a grudge against Shaikh who ran a shop at Astodia Gate area.
"Last month, Samir fought with Shaikh after refusing to pay some old dues to him. He then lodged a complaint with police that he was beaten and looted by Shaikh and his sons. So we arrested Shaikh and two of his sons who were sent to jail, where they were lodged for two weeks till their release on Rakshabandhan," he said.
"However, Samir and his family decided to teach Shaikh a lesson. So, Samir along with his two brothers, their father Abdul Karim, his son-in-law Ajju and two others attacked Shaikh and killed him. We are now searching for four other accused," Sisodia said.
