A local court today sentenced three persons, including two doctors, to one-year imprisonment in a case relating to the loss of vision to 66 people who underwent cataract surgery at Joseph's Eye Hospital in Perambalur on July 29, 2008.
Chief Judicial Magistrate M.Sridhar found the Hospital Managing Director Dr.Nelson Jesudasan, Chief Administrative officer Christopher Thomas and Dr.Ashok guilty in the case.
The CJM acquitted four others including two doctors. The court also directed the hospital to provide compensation, ranging from Rs 2.28 lakh to Rs 5.75 lakh with 7.5 per cent interest, to the victims.
CBI probed the case following a Madras High Court order. The agency said ten victims died and a victim was missing.
The victims said they were not satisfied with the compensation and the punishment given to the culprits and they would file an appeal in the High Court.
Sixty six villagers from different villages in and around Perambalur and Villupuram, who went for the cataract eye surgery camp organised by the hospital, lost their vision.
