Twenty-six labourers were at work at the construction site when the mishap occurred. In the course of their attempts to raise the lintel of the house, it collapsed and the workers were trapped under the debris, according to officials.
On information, several people rushed to the spot and dragged the trapped persons out of the debris. They were immediately rushed to hospital. Persons with minor injuries were relieved after first-aid, the officials said.
Rampur District Magistrate N K S Chauhan, who reached the spot, announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 20,000 each to the kin of the deceased, and recommended the matter to the state government for equitable compensation.
